We tend to think that many things are absolutely right or wrong, but are they? let’s take the example of abortions in US as our subject. While people claim that it’s ethically right universally, it’s not the case. People with orthodox values consider it a sin - breaching the right to life. Does what’s right or wrong depend on the person seeing it? There’s more to it. When creating laws to prevent child marriages, society claimed that it’s wrong to involve one’s faith. Today, it’s a nearly universally accepted idea that child marriages need to be banned. Does right or wrong depend on the time you live? Take the issue of legality of Cannabis use in US. We observe that within the same country, few states say it’s legal and others say it’s illegal. Does right or wrong depend on where you live? Let’s take wars as an example. Until the very end, each side has its own reasons to believe that they are fighting for the right thing. After the end of war, the victor determines which is right and wrong for the future readers. Past history of an issue determines why something is considered good or bad. Does where you were born determine what’s right or wrong? This all creates a big question mark on our common belief that right and wrong are absolute. The only answer that answers all questions is that it’s relative.
As Einsteinian physics says, You Observe the Universe from Your Own Frame of Reference!
Why is it important to understand the relativity of our assumptions? In most conflicts, we tend to get self-absorbed into our facts and fail to consider the other side. A good conflict resolution always involves a mutual compromise, such a compromise couldn’t be reached if we don’t understand the relativity of our values.
Remember when each person in a breakup claims they were totally right? This is how it happens! Right or Wrong is relative!
